FAQ's

As per RCI mandates, professionals need to have an M.Phil./ M.A in Clinical Psychology or a Diploma in Clinical Psychology/Psycho-social Rehabilitation/PsyD in Clinical Psychology from RCI-accredited institutions (the list is provided on the website). After achieving the required qualification, you can register on the RCI website and apply online. Due to server issues, you may need to try multiple times at different times of the day. Refreshing the page several times can also help.

Some Tips:
Make sure to provide accurate phone numbers and email IDs.
Keep your documents (certificates) ready in PDF format in one single folder.
After submitting documents or payments, take screenshots as well.
Write to the RCI and make several calls to ensure it is followed up regularly.
Close other tabs and windows while loading the RCI website.
If a 404 error appears, go to the ‘Home’ page and retry.
If possible, try making multiple attempts from different systems.

Each country usually has its own mandates for certification as a psychologist. The basic requirement for licensing is a Ph.D. or required clinical supervision hours along with passing a specialized licensing examination. Most western countries follow a graduation + postgraduation (4+2) years model, as opposed to the 3+2 model in India. This creates a 1-year gap for aspirants, who must complete 1 year of work experience or do another postgraduation to meet the requirements before pursuing a Ph.D. To get a student visa for the UK, apart from relevant certificates, you may require a score of 7 and above in IELTS exams (this varies from university to university). To better understand the processes required for each country, it is recommended to get in touch with a senior or a colleague who has gone through the process or get in touch with the university/college that you are interested in pursuing your studies from.

At present, the only body providing licenses for psychologists is the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). They issue licenses/registration numbers only to clinical psychologists who complete an M.Phil./Diploma in Clinical Psychology/Psycho-social Rehabilitation/PsyD as mandated by RCI. The Allied Healthcare Bill of 2021 has included psychology as part of the paramedical field; however, the process of licensing is not yet initiated. The NCAHP bill and other notifications can be accessed here:
https://ncahp.abdm.gov.in/Download
The NCAHP has released a curriculum and has started enrollment as part of data collection to build guidelines and policies in India for psychology professionals other than clinical psychologists. Below is the enrollment portal:

CRE points are applicable only if you have an RCI license number and are required to attend programs accredited by RCI to earn CRE points. The details can be obtained from the RCI website.

IPN is currently working to create a list of institutions offering internships for psychology students.

Based on specific needs or interest areas, there are courses offered by institutions in India/abroad to certify you in an area of therapy or practice. A short list of these courses will be updated soon on the IPN website.

There are Indian and international journals published in the field of psychology, and the Impact Factor (IF) would be a good criterion to check if it is a reliable journal. Additionally, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has published a list of accredited journals that can help identify good journals in psychology. A short list of journals will be updated on the website soon. This link may give you an idea of the list of UGC journals: UGC CARE List of Journals

Currently, there are no clear legal mandates on the eligibility to practice as a psychologist in India. However, the norm is that a postgraduate degree in psychology with relevant clinical supervision and practice is required. NCAHP is in the process of building guidelines and mandates and recently published a notice to discontinue distance education model of education in psychology.

Some psychological assessments and screening tools are open access on search engine platforms. Once you type the name of the tool, you will get the PDF of the test items, instructions, scoring, and interpretation. These can be directly used in your research with appropriate citation. If the items/manual/scoring are not available, ethical permission from the author/publishing house is required to use the tool, and it should not be procured from someone else who has access. If research funding is available, you can purchase the tools from copyright publishers. Some websites where tools can be purchased or accessed include:
NPC India
Prasad Psycho
Pearson Clinical
Psychology Tools
PAR, Inc.
Anxiety Canada
MAIC
A4 Autism Bangalore

There are screening tools, assessment tools, and diagnostic tools in psychometric assessments. Some of these are self-reports, observer reports, clinician reports, parent reports, structured or semi-structured interviews, projective, semi-projective tools, or cognitive and neuropsychological assessments. In India, a postgraduate is typically trained to conduct self-reports and screenings, and sometimes structured or semi-structured interviews. Lengthy diagnostic assessments, such as the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), Rorschach Inkblot Test (RIBT), neuropsychological batteries, and Wechsler Intelligence Scales, require specific training and supervision to administer, score, interpret, and write reports. Therefore, psychometric tools should be used following the training received. There is a classification of level A, Level B and level C which is followed in Western countries to categorize eligibility to conduct psychological assessments. APA guidelines: https://www.apa.org/about/policy/guidelines-psychological-assessment-evaluation.pdf

The Indian Association of Clinical Psychology (IACP) has published a code of conduct document for clinical psychologists on their website. Ethical standards and guidelines are not clearly outlined, but the American Psychological Association (APA) and the British Psychological Society (BPS) websites list codes of conduct and ethical standards that can be used as a reference, with cultural considerations.

Currently, discussions are underway to finalize and format a curriculum to establish a good balance between clinical exposure and theoretical practice. The nomenclature and structure of courses might change, but this will not impact current Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) registered clinical psychologists.

The NCAHP clearly specifies that mental health professionals who do not fall under RCI mandates are eligible for licensing under the act. Therefore, the provisions under this bill should not have a direct impact or implication on clinical psychologists. However, guidelines for licensing and continuous education programs are in the pipeline for other psychologists or behavioral scientists.

At present, the M.Phil. intake for the course will continue until 2026, and after that, there may be a change in nomenclature (the term M.Phil. may change). However, clear guidelines and processes are still being developed and not publicly available. Some universities have started their RCI accredited Bsc clinical psychology and MA clinical psychology programs. The list of accredited institutes can be obtained from RCI website.
