Psychology in India has its roots in ancient Indian thoughts and is embedded in
different texts, even before scientific psychology came into existence as an
independent discipline. Psychology as a scientific subject was introduced in 1905 in
India and came into existence as an independent discipline in 1916, at the University
of Calcutta.
On 14 th January 1925, the Indian Psychology Association was formed at a meeting
held at Varanasi, Banaras Hindu University. Commemorating this event, the website
of Indian Psychologists Network was launched on January 14, 2022.
Indian Psychologists Network (IPN) was initiated as a virtual platform on 21 st
November 2006, to connect all the psychologists from India. Members of different
national and state level psychology associations in India are members of this
network and by the end of December 2023, IPN had a membership of more than
18,000.
